This study analyzes the socioeconomic determinants influencing drought damage, with a particular focus on identifying those affecting domestic drought in Republic of Korea. Ultimately, it proposes policy implications to enhance response strategies and resilience to domestic drought. To achieve this, the study first reviews existing literature to establish the socioeconomic determinants of drought vulnerability. It then employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and feature importance to prioritize these determinants based on open data provided by the government of Republic of Korea. The feature importance is conducted using Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and XGBoost Algorithm. The findings indicate that the primary socioeconomic determinants influencing the number of individuals requiring emergency water supply at the national level include percentage of elderly population, percentage of agricultural workers, percentage of population under 5 years old, and percentage of basic livelihood security recipients. These findings suggest that disparities in regional development, the aging of rural communities, and the heightened vulnerability of at-risk populations contribute significantly to drought susceptibility and exposure. Given the rapid aging of rural populations, this study underscores the necessity of sustained institutional interventions to enhance disaster response capabilities among elderly population, reduce the exposure of vulnerable populations to drought and related hazards, and implement protective policies to safeguard these at-risk groups.
