The Purpose of this study was to search for the appropriate design of the integrated curriculum for Korean elementary schools and to examine general conditions for this design. First, four curriculum types were designed based on logical analysis of the correlation among the purpose and contents of such integrated curriculum, its organizational center and methodology, and its target and level. Based on the results, a design work on an integrated curriculum was launched. Seven types of integrated curriculum were desinged, in the following major areas : the topic-based subject integration, the theme-based subject integration, and the theme-based integrated course. Second, to examine conditions for developing the integrated curriculum, questionnaires research was conducted, and the school-level curriculum was studied through the content analysis method. The results revealed that teachers display considerable interest in the development of the integrated curriulum, but lack knowledge and functional abilities necessary for such curriculum development; and the possibility of their obtaining opportunity to participate in training programs for such curriculum development is low. In addition there is no department responsible for the integrated curriculum development, and even the currently existing activity plans of other departments contain no mention of integrated curriculum development. Therefore, it was judged that, in general, school conditions with respect to integrated curriculum development are negative.
