이차대전 이후 독일의 전몰장병 기념 변화 : 할베 숲 묘지, 독일의 저항기념관, 연방군기념물을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 지난 70여 년간 진행된 독일 기억문화의 변화 추세를 전몰장병 기념에 초점을 맞춰 파악한다. 이를 위해 여기에서는 세 개의 대상을 선택하였다. 독일 연방군기념물, 독일저항기념센터, 할베 숲묘지가 바로 그것이다.
이 사례들을 중심으로 볼 때, 독일에서 전몰장병 기념은 이제까지 그랬던 것처럼 앞으로도 나치범죄 희생자들에 대한 기억과 긴장관계 속에서 발전할 것이다. 긴장의 정도는 기념의 차원과 파급 범위에 따라 차이를 나타낼 것으로 보인다. 지역 차원에서는 일차대전 이후에 마을마다 세워진 군사기념물에 희생자 명판이나 기독교적 상칭을 추가하기 때문에 갈등의 소지는 거의 없다. 각급 부대나 군 차원에서도 특별한 정치적 의미를 부여하지 않고, 군사적 기능수행자에 대한 애도를 표하는 한, 갈등은 회피할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 국가적 차원에서는 예비역 장병단체들을 비롯한 애국적 보수와 민주주의적 진보 세력들 사이에 긴장이 격화될 개연성이 충분히 존재한다. 국가범죄 희생자들에 대한 공공의 기억이 약화되고, 군사적 기억의 조형물을 매개로 전 국민을 대상으로 한 기념의례 속에 지난 반세기 이상 극도로 절제되었던 용어들이 등장할 때 잠재적 긴장은 격렬한 갈등으로 바뀔 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Historical development of a nation is reflected in its political necrolatry. Since the emergence of the nation-state, the commemoration of war and fallen soldiers is regarded as necessary for the mobilization of its human resources. In the case of 'unjust' war in which the national army was implicated in massacres against unarmed citizens, however, things are different. Commemorating fallen soldiers of the national army who committed wartime atrocities is a very sensitive issue.
The knotty problem is not settled with the establishment of the Bundeswehrehrenmal. There is still no complete consensus between the people regarding the intentions of the memorial. If we examine the Bundeswehr Memorial from a topographical perspective, however, we can appreciate its meaning more positively: the Bendlerblock, the seat of the Federal Minister of Defense, also contains the German Resistance Memorial Center, commemorating the attempted assassination of Hitler on 20 July 1944. Due to the authenticity of the place it became a symbolic site as a counterpart to the Bundeswehr Memorial and keeps the balance in dealing with contemporary history. Halbe forest cemetery, basically designed by the principle of uniformity, shows the dead lying with the rank and file as sacrifices for the community.
