The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a person-centered group art therapy program on marital communication and intimacy. The participants were five married couples (10 individuals) who expressed interest in improving their marital communication and relationship, and the program consisted of 8 sessions conducted once or twice a week, employing a mixed methods design combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected using the Marital Communication Inventory and the Marital Intimacy Scale, and pre- and post-program changes were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Qualitative data were collected through session-by-session observation and analyzed through repeated comparative analysis to identify categories of change.
The results were as follows. First, marital communication and intimacy scores both showed statistically significant increases following program participation, with improvements observed across all participants. Second, qualitative analysis confirmed that changes unfolded according to a four-stage process — initial stage, self-discovery stage, change stage, and closing stage. In the initial stage, participants began to express themselves through non-verbal media and to form a sense of safety; in the middle stages, previously suppressed emotions surfaced and participants' perceptions of their partners shifted; and in the later stage, participants directly communicated their emotions to their partners and experienced a transition toward a new way of relating, exemplified by envisioning their future together. Third, these changes did not occur abruptly within isolated sessions but accumulated progressively across the four stages.
This study is meaningful in that it comprehensively examined the effects of person-centered group art therapy for couples through an integration of quantitative and qualitative methods, and in particular, by closely examining the session-by-session process of change, it confirmed the practical applicability of the program in clinical settings with couples.
