This paper examines Kim Dong-lee`s novels relating them to the form, lyrical novels. When Kim Dong-lee`s novels are seen as lyrical novels, there are possibilities to newly interpret existing criticisms that his novels has received. The legends of folk places, mysteries, and Shamanistic world that Kim Dong-lee depicted symbolically reflect the reality at the time. Kim Dong-lee created his own unique view of the world, and embodied the essence of human life in his novel space. Lyrical novels overcome the gap between fiction and reality by strong combination of images. That breaks down the boundaries of reality and fiction. The images include characters` eyes toward the world and generate stationary scenes that capture the meaning of the world (portraiture). To realize this, Kim Dong-lee utilizes its unique `description`. The description that enables his novel world to be more realistic grants verisimilitude to events and situations that can`t occur. Thereby Kim Dong-lee`s novel world becomes a vibrant space. Even though the characters in Kim Dong-lee`s novels are in tragic reality, they find new creation rather than destruction and loss. That is related to death but the death here is only the physical one. So their desires of life are toward `the other side of the death`. Kim Dong-lee discovers desires to the other world that doesn`t exist in reality-the artificial world-in the afterlife.
