Our ancestors used to control their mind through taking some cups of tea in their daily life. They wrote in their poems the emotions they had experienced from their life.
Also, judging from the historical records they loved dancing and singing, we can tell they had spent their romantic life full of flavor and interest.
It was the scholars of the Chinese classics or Buddhist monks rather than common people using domestic language who mainly wrote tea-poetry. This was because the persons of lower birth were so badly off that they couldn't afford tea. As a result, they couldn't come in contact with the romantic pursuits and were far away from them. Therefore I guess that`s the reason why there were not many of poems about tea.
In their tea-poetry were expressed their plain life or poetical livelihood by the motif of tea to lead their harmonious life.
Wharang, a group of elite youngsters in Silla dynasty developed `Poong-ryu-do`, the poetical and elegant way of life, which was the main current of their thought. Recently we can see a lot of poets write tea-poetry. Throughout the Korean history, tea-poetry has been always emitting a fresh and elegant mood.
We Koreans seem to know how to enjoy Poong-ryu-do.
Considering the romantic pursuits expressed in Korean tea-poetry, we can see the temperament of Poong-ryu-do underlying in the bottom of our people`s heart. I think my study is not made thoroughly and extensively, for I focused on the works of the tea poets who`d enjoyed Poong-ryu-do from Korean classical poems and songs.
Finally through the study of tea-poetry, I've found the poetical way of life is our ancestors' property of the unique, creative spirit and culture.
