「布衣交集」의 眞情과 虛僞 = Sincerity and False Consciousness of Poui-gyojip

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Poui-gyojip is a Korean classical Chinese medium-length novel written in the late 19th century. The narrator of Poui-gyojip illuminated the male and female protagonists with two contradictory views, the view for amusement(the author’s view that saw Cho-ok as an object of play) and the view of sincerity(the author’s another view that try to understand the inside of Cho-ok sincerely). The beginning of the work was dominated by the view for amusement, but since the middle of the work, the center of gravity shifted towards the view of sincerity. At the end of the work, the view of sincerity was completely dominant, and especially in the finishing scene, only the view of sincerity that saw the male and female protagonists sympathetically remained.
However, in view of the tragic destiny of Cho-ok, the author of Poui-gyojip did not fully express the tragic embedded in the work. The reason for this was that the author, who did not understand the consciousness of Cho-ok, chose the way of the comic from the starting point of the work and then illuminated Cho-ok with two contradictory views.
The peculiarity of Poui-gyojip lay in Cho-ok's idea that defined ‘affair’ as ‘pure friendship’. However, the ‘ethics of love’ proposed by Cho-ok was hardly recognized as justified for the following two reasons. First, the author of Poui-gyojip could not set up appropriate character relationships for searching issues seriously. The relationship between Yi-saeng and Cho-ok family was a major obstacle to judge Cho-ok's desire as sincerity, not false consciousness. Secondly, there is a big logical flaw in Cho-ok's idea. Cho-ok pursued spiritual sympathy between best friends, and furthermore publicly insisted that the physical relationship was legitimate. But a friendship and physical love are separate issues. In order to avoid logical contradictions, Cho-ok must justify the love of married men and women in the dimension of affirmation of desire by abandoning the name of pure friendship, but she did not choose this way.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

「布衣交集」은 19세기 후반에 창작된 한문 중편소설이다. 「포의교집」의 서술자는 모순된 두 시선, 곧 ‘유희의 시선’과 ‘진정의 시선’으로 남녀 주인공을 조명했다. 작품 초반부는 ‘유희의 시선’이 지배적이었으나 중반부 이후 차츰 ‘진정의 시선’ 쪽으로 무게중심이 옮겨 갔다. 종반부에 이르면 진정의 시선이 완전한 우세를 점하고, 특히 마무리 장면에서는 남녀 주인공을 모두 동정적으로 바라보는 진정의 시선만 남았다. 그러나 초옥의 비극적 운명에 비추어 「포의교집」은 작품에 내장된 비극성을 충분히 발현하지 못했다. 그 원인은 초옥의 의식을 온전히 파악하지 못한 작자가 작품의 출발점에서 희화화의 길을 택하고 이후 모순된 두 시선으로 초옥을 바라본 데 있다.
「포의교집」의 가장 큰 특이점은 ‘불륜’을 ‘순수한 우정’이라 규정한 초옥의 생각에 있다. 그러나 「포의교집」에서 초옥이 제시한 ‘사랑의 윤리’는 다음 두 가지 이유에서 그 정당성을 인정받기 어렵다. 첫째, 진지한 문제 제기와 탐색에 적합한 인물 관계를 설정하지 못했다. 이생과 초옥 가족의 불평등 관계, 특히 초옥 남편의 취약한 위치는 초옥의 願望을 허위의식이 아닌 진정으로 판단하는 데 큰 방해 요소로 작용했다. 둘째, 초옥의 생각에 큰 논리적 결함이 있다. 초옥은 ‘知己論’을 내세워 정신적 교감을 추구했고, 나아가 육체관계까지 정당한 것으로 공공연히 주장했다. 그러나 ‘포의지교’와 육체적 性愛는 별개의 사안이다. 논리적 모순을 피하기 위해서는 포의지교의 명분을 버리고 욕망 긍정의 차원에서 기혼남녀의 사랑을 정당화해야 하나 초옥은 이 길을 택하지 않았다.
