1. Survey for infection control in small and medium sized hospitals
- The response rate of survey, to investigate the reality for infection control of small and medium sized hospitals, was only 8.0%. The main reason of low response rate were absence of infection control practitioner(ICP)(63.3%), general director's rejection to survey(40.0%), and absence of infection control activities(6.7%) from 30 hospitals which did not attend to survey.
- Among attending hospitals to survey, 89.5% have infection control committee and guideline. However, infection control committee was held 1-2 times per year in 52.9% of hospitals and under 50% of hospitals have performed infection control guideline over 80%. Especially, performance rate(>80%) of peripheral venous management and hand hygiene was only 23-26%.
- In 68.4% of hospitals, survey was done, but multi-drug resistant gram positive pathogens were usually main and activities for analysis(39.5%) and improvement (50.0%) was poor. The most active survey was for indwelling urinary catheter related infections (< 50%) and surgical site infection surevey was done in only 20% hospitals.
- 63.2% of ICP did their activities in whole year but dedicated ICP were only 23.7%.
- The education program was conducted mainly to nurse and perforamance rate of education for doctors was low.
2. Visiting Consult
- Visiting consult was done in 5 hospitals. There were no dedicated ICP and only one ICP was educated by special training course.
- At least, adjunct ICP, who can do basic infection control activities after getting education and training course, was needed.
- There is needed to make infrastructure for infection control and advice of professionals and financial support to make effective infection control activities.
3. Development of consulting web site for small and medium sized hospitals
- We completed successfully development of web site and management strategies are necessary after end of this study.
4. Overseas small and medium sized hospital network and advisory system survey
- We compared SPICE program and DICON program, which are operating in North Carolina, USA. SPICE is public and DICON is private by Duke University. We decided SPICE program is more compatible in our situations.
