대중음악에서 코러스 역할에 관한 고찰 : M.C The Max 음악을 중심으로 = A Study on the Role of Chorus in Popular Music: Focusing on M.C The Max music

국문 초록 (Abstract)

대중음악은 나날이 발전하는 시대의 변화에 발맞춰 함께 변화하고 있다. 대중음악의 발전에는 다양한 요소가 있는데 그 안에는 보컬하모니 연주도 포함되어 있다. 과거에 메인 보컬의 연주를 보조해주는 정도로 단순하게만 사용되던 보컬하모니 연주는 현재 다양한 기법 연주를 통하여 편곡적 중요도가 더욱 높아졌다.
본 논문은 M.C The Max 음악을 중심으로 대중음악에서 사용된 코러스 연주의 기법과 효과를 분석하여 코러스 역할에 관해 연구 하였다. M.C The Max는 2000년 문차일드로 데뷔하여 현재의 이름으로 개명 후 지금까지 20년 이상 활동하고 있는 3인조 밴드이다. 본 논문에서는 이들의 정규 앨범에 수록 된 곡들 중 코러스 연주가 포함된 곡들로만 선정하였다. 문차일드로 발표한 ‘A Boy From The Moon’, ‘태양은 가득히’, ‘공유’, M.C The Max로 발표한 ‘Doesn't Matter’, ‘Disco Fever’, ‘사랑의 時’, ‘낮달’, ‘행복하지 말아요’, ‘해바라기도 가끔 목이 아프죠’, ‘아쉬워서’, ‘사랑은 아프려고 하는거죠’, ‘가슴아 그만해’, ‘Moment’, ‘눈물은 모르게’, ‘Closing Time’, ‘You Are My Sunshine’, ‘그대가 분다’, ‘아스라이’, ‘pale blue note’, ‘사계’등이 분석곡으로 사용되었다. 코러스 연주 기법은 선행 연구를 참조하여 투티, 병진행, 반진행, 사진행, 유니즌, 패드, 콜 앤 리스폰스, 카운터포인트, 애드립으로 구분하였다.
본 연구 결과 곡에 따라 병진행 기법으로 단선율로만 연주하며 듀엣 효과를 주기도 하였고, 때로는 여러 기법을 사용해 다양한 효과를 주기도 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 병진행, 반진행, 사진행이 서로 연결되며 연주되기도 하고 카운터포인트와 패드 연주가 이어지며 곡의 분위기를 자연스럽게 이어주기도 하였다. 또한 투티 형태로 백그라운드 보컬들이 다 같이 연주할 때 병진행, 반진행, 사진행과 함께 유니즌을 포함하여 주선율을 더욱 강조시켜주는 효과와 함께 화음으로 인한 풍성한 사운드를 만들어 내는 효과 또한 보였다. 패드 기법을 사용하여 주선율을 감싸주는 효과를 주며 스트링 악기를 대신하는 효과를 주기도 하였다. 주선율이 연주될 때 카운터포인트 기법을 이용하여 곡에 2가지 곡이 동시에 불리는 듯이 새로운 느낌을 불어넣어 주었다. 이렇듯 코러스 연주의 여러 기법들을 적절한 곳에 다양한 방식으로 배치하여 주선율을 강조하고, 사운드를 더욱 풍성하게 만들어 주며, 곡에 다채로운 느낌을 주는 효과를 주었음을 알 수 있었다.
본 연구로 코러스의 중요성을 다시 한 번 확인 할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 현 대중음악에서는 코러스 연주의 역할이 점점 더 중요해지고 있는 시점에 있다. 앞으로 좀 더 다양한 형태의 창의적인 연주로 발전되어야 할 것이며, 그러한 작업들이 앞으로 나아갈 현대 대중음악 발전에 크게 기여할 것으로 판단된다.

Popular music is changing along with the changes of the times that develop day by day. There are various factors in the development of popular music, including vocal harmony performance. Vocal harmony performance, which was used simply enough to assist the main vocal performance in the past, has become more important in arrangement through various techniques. Hence, this paper aims to study on a role of chorus in popular music.
This paper studies the role of chorus by analyzing the technique and effect of chorus performance used in popular music, focusing on M.C The Max’s music. M.C The Max is a three-member band that debuted as Moonchild in 2000 and has been acting for more than 20 years since its current name was changed. In this paper, only songs with chorus performances are selected among the songs in their regular albums.
'A Boy From The Moon', 'Full Sun' and 'Gong Yoo' released under the name of ‘Moonchild’, 'Doesn't Matter', 'Disco Fever', 'Time of Love', 'Day Moon', 'Don't be happy', 'Sunflower sometimes hurts my throat', 'Because I'm sorry', 'Love is about to hurt', 'My heart, stop it', 'Moment', 'Without tears', 'Closing Time', 'You Are My Sunshine', 'You Blow', 'Asrai', 'pale blue note', and 'Four Seasons' released under the name of ‘M.C The Max’ are used as analysis songs. The chorus playing technique is classified into Tutti, Parallel motion, Contrary motion, Oblique motion, Unison, Pad, Call-and-Response, Counterpoint, and Ad-lib by referring to previous studies.
As a result of this study, it is found that depending on the song, a duet effect is given by performing only a single melody with a parallel motion technique, and sometimes various effects are given by using various techniques. Parallel motion, contrary motion, and oblique motion are connected and played, and counterpoint and pad performances continue to naturally connect the atmosphere of the song. In addition, when the background vocalists played together in the form of a tutti, Parallel motion, Contrary motion, and Oblique motion, along with Unison, are included to further emphasize the main melody, as well as the effect of creating a rich sound due to chords. In addition, the pad technique is used to give the effect of wrapping the main melody and to substitute for string instruments, and when the main melody was played, the Conterpoint technique is used to infuse the song with a new feeling as if two songs are sung at the same time. As such, it is found that the various techniques of chorus performance are placed in appropriate places in various ways to emphasize the main melody, make the sound richer, and give the song a colorful feel.
This study provides an opportunity to confirm the importance of chorus once again and shows why the role of chorus performance is becoming more and more important in current popular music. It is expected that it will develop into more creative forms of performance in the future, and it is judged that such works will greatly contribute to the development of modern popular music going forward.
