Since the Industrial Revolution, the tension between economic development and resource consumption has continued to intensify. As an industry highly dependent on material use, production, and rapid consumption renewal, the fashion industry has increasingly revealed problems related to resource waste, inventory accumulation, and textile waste management. In particular, under the influence of the fast-fashion model, the fashion and use cycles of clothing products have become progressively shorter, resulting in large quantities of garments being left unused or discarded before they have completely lost their functional value. At the same time, deadstock fabrics, surplus fabrics, and unsold products generated during production and distribution further intensify resource waste in the fashion industry. Against this background, this study is grounded in the theories of sustainable fashion and the circular economy, with upcycling design as its core approach. It examines the possibility of reintegrating existing materials into apparel and bag product systems through design intervention and transforming their value by focusing on two types of textile materials: deadstock fabrics and discarded denim garments.
First, a literature review was conducted to examine theories related to sustainable fashion, the circular economy, and upcycling fashion design. This review clarified the theoretical basis for using deadstock fabrics and discarded denim garments as materials for upcycling design and categorized five upcycling design methods: fabric transformation, deconstruction and reconstruction, structural redesign, preservation and reconfiguration of material traces, and functional transformation. Second, a case analysis was conducted by selecting representative upcycling fashion brands and comparatively examining them in terms of material source, product type, and design method. This analysis identified the application characteristics of the five methods in brand cases and provided references for the subsequent production of works. Third, the above methods were applied to the production of works. Deadstock fabrics that had been stored for more than five years and could no longer be sold, as well as discarded denim garments generated at the post-consumer stage, were used as the main materials. Based on these materials, ten apparel works and five bag works were produced.
The theoretical review indicated that sustainable fashion is not merely concerned with the use of environmentally friendly materials. Rather, it is a comprehensive design issue closely related to resource utilization, production methods, consumption structures, product life cycles, and waste management. The circular economy provided the theoretical basis for shifting the focus of this study from “waste treatment” to “material reuse.” Although deadstock fabrics have not undergone consumer use, they may leave conventional material circulation systems because of prolonged inventory accumulation or distribution difficulties. Discarded denim garments, although they have completed their original wearing cycle, still retain fabric properties, structural components, and traces of use. Therefore, both types of materials have the potential to re-enter product systems through upcycling design.
The case analysis demonstrated that upcycling design is not a single form of reusing old materials. Instead, it is a design process involving multi-layered transformation according to material conditions and product objectives. Using the five methods categorized in the theoretical review as analytical criteria, the cases revealed the application characteristics of fabric transformation, deconstruction and reconstruction, structural redesign, preservation and reconfiguration of material traces, and functional transformation. Fabric transformation was primarily used to enhance material surface expression and visual value. Deconstruction and reconstruction emphasized the reorganization of existing materials or garment components. Structural redesign focused on the re-establishment of silhouettes, seam lines, connection methods, and product structures. Preservation and reconfiguration of material traces emphasized the reuse of existing textures, wear, stitching lines, fading, and traces of use. Functional transformation referred to the process through which existing materials or products acquire new value within new product types and use purposes.
The production of works showed that, although deadstock fabrics and discarded denim garments are both reusable textile materials, their upcycling pathways differ. As planar materials that have not yet been made into garments, deadstock fabrics were transformed into apparel works mainly through color combinations, texture arrangement, structural division, layered composition, and silhouette formation. In contrast, discarded denim garments, as materials containing pre-existing garment structures, were transformed into bag works primarily through deconstruction, component preservation, structural reconfiguration, and functional transformation. These findings demonstrate that the “structural regeneration of deadstock fabrics and discarded denim garments” proposed in this study does not refer to the simple reuse of materials. Rather, it refers to a design process in which product structures are newly established according to the original condition of the materials.
The significance of this study can be summarized in three aspects. First, at the theoretical level, it clarifies the differences between deadstock fabrics and discarded denim garments as upcycling design materials and identifies the basis for their reuse. Second, at the methodological level, it categorizes five upcycling design methods through a theoretical review, confirms their application characteristics through brand case analysis, and relates them to the different conditions of the two material types. Third, at the practical level, the production of ten apparel works and five bag works demonstrates the possibility of transforming deadstock fabrics from planar materials into apparel structures and converting discarded denim garments from pre-existing garment components into bag structures. This study provides theoretical references and practical grounds for material selection, method application, and work production in upcycling fashion design.
