Urban trees provide a variety of ecosystem services, and quantifying these services is essential for establishing sustainable urban management systems. LiDAR-based QSMs (Quantitative Structure Models) reconstruct the three-dimensional structure of trees and enable precise estimation of individual tree volume, which serves as the basis for estimating carbon storage. In this study, a total of 53 individual trees from four species (Zelkova serrata, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Pinus densiflora, and Aesculus turbinata) commonly found in urban environments were investigated. From these data, tree structural variables that can be readily measured in the field, including diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, crown base height, crown height, crown width, and crown projected area were extracted, and aboveground biomass was estimated on a volume basis using the QSM approach. The measurement accuracy of DBH and tree height was validated through field surveys, and allometric equations for estimating aboveground biomass were developed based on the extracted tree structural variables. The allometric equations incorporating tree structural variables showed high explanatory power across species (R2=0.68~0.86). Furthermore, species-specific allometric equations were derived to estimate not only total aboveground biomass but also stem and non-stem components individually. This study demonstrates a biomass estimation approach applicable to structurally heterogeneous urban trees using terrestrial LiDAR and confirms that efficient and accurate estimation is feasible using only field-measurable structural variables. The allometric equations presented in this study are expected to serve as an effective tool for the quantitative assessment of carbon storage in urban trees.
