Labeling Index on Mouse Epidermal Cells and the Effect of Ultraviolet Light Rediation Jai II Youn, M.D., Bang Soon Kim, M.D., Jin Ho Chung, M.D. Department of Dermatiology, College of Medicine, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea We investigated the labeling index(LI) on mouse epidermal cells and the effect of ultraviolet light radiation(UVR). At one hour after injection of tritiated thymidine, UVB 100mJ/㎠ using a high pressure mercury arc was irradiated. Skin biopsy was done at 24 hours and 48 hours after UVR> Microautoradiography was done to check the labeling index. The results are summarized as follows, 1. LI on mouse epidermal cells was 5.4±1.7% after 24 hours, 2.6±1.5% after 48 hours. LI after 24 hours and 48 hours had decreased slightly but there was no difference between before and after UVR This result suggest that the changes in DNA synthesis had recovered by 24 hours after UVR. This recovery persisted at 48 hours after UVR radiation.
