This case study examines the characteristics of the sub-dimensions of science capital among 32 fifth and sixth graders residing in Seoul’s G District, explores the correlations between these sub-dimensions, and investigates how participation in an informal science program influenced specific sub-dimensions.
The science capital index survey measured three dimensions: science-related cultural capital, science-related social capital, and science-related actions and practices. Individual interviews were also conducted to contextualize the survey results. Correlations between items in the science capital survey index were then analyzed. The results showed that participating students scored particularly high in the perceived usefulness of science, the transferability of science-related qualifications in the labor market, scientific literacy (using scientific evidence to make arguments; science-related cultural capital), and parents’/teachers’ perceptions of science as well as the frequency of science-related conversations (science-related social capital). Notably, ‘parents’ showed a significant correlation with students’ overall science capital. Interview results indicated that learning experiences gained through participation in the informal science program promoted science-related conversations in daily life and helped foster positive perceptions toward continued science learning. However, the small sample size and high coefficient of variation (CV) due to the cross-sectional design suggest that extreme responses from a few participants influenced the average values. Therefore, caution is needed in generalizing the results, and further research is required to supplement these findings.
