Okinawa is where a 3-month long ground battle took place by involving residents from Japan during the Asia-Pacific War. Many Korean (Joseon people) victims also fell at Okinawa. Most of them were military service men and comfort women. This study introduces the Korean (Joseon) victims and the memorial stone and memorial facilities for such victims and considers such memorial stone and memorial facilities based on the moral gained from the Okinawa battle, “the military does not protect residents.”
As a result, it was found that the memorial stone from the 1970s cites that the Japanese and Koreans were fellow countrymen that fought together. On the other hand, the memorial stone that was established by a civic group partially contained facts that accused the Japanese military, but such memorial stones were only a few. As the issue of “comfort women” has become a key theme in the historical conflict between Korea and Japan after the 1990s, a movement began which recognized the accord between Korea and Japan. Such movement was conveyed in the form of generalizing the moral of the Okinawa battle and the sexual violence that accompanied the military bases.
In peace education, the use of such symbol is necessary from the perspective of the “eradication of military.”
