Jakdojeongsa(鵲島精舍) is a cultural heritage site located in Oegu-ri, Seopo- myeon, Sacheon-si. It is the place where Eo Deuk-gang(魚得江, 1470~1550) and Yi Hwang(李滉, 1501~1570) exchanged tidal poetry(潮汐詩) after their excursion during the early Joseon period. In the modern era, it was esteemed as the most renowned site in Gonyang(昆陽). Despite this status, it has not been registered as an entry in major encyclopedias, highlighting the need for efforts to illuminate its value. This study examines the management process of Jakdojeongsa, which began with Yi Hwang’s excursion to Jakdo, to clarify its historical significance.
In 1533, Yi Hwang accompanied Eo Deuk-gang, who was then the magistrate of Gonyang, on a tour of Jakdo and composed poetry. After Yi Hwang’s death, the island attained a distinguished status and emerged as a significant local landmark during the modern transition period. During the Japanese colonial period, embankments were constructed around the area, further improving accessibility to the island. Scholars from the Gyeongsang-udo region held ganghoe(講會) there and subsequently planned the management of Jakdojeongsa. The pavilion was finally completed in 1930, and its detailed process and institutional framework are recorded in Jakdojeongsagi(鵲島精舍記), written by Gwon Do-yong(權道溶, 1877~1963).
Originally a mere small island, Jakdo was transformed into a local attraction after Yi Hwang toured the site while attending to Eo Deuk-gang. Later generations of literati honored their legacy by writing poems using the same rhymes(次韻詩) and undertook excursions to experience the site of their predecessors. These visits evolved into forms of ganghoe and sugye(修契), clearly reflecting an intention to revitalize the local literary spirit and preserve Confucian scholarship. Jakdojeongsa holds significant regional importance as a symbol of the resurgence and solidarity of Confucianism in the modern era, as well as a site that followed the academic origins of Yi Hwang.
