1958년, 위기의 북한과 중국의 선택: 북한 주둔 중국군 철수의 원인과 배경 = Crisis of North Korea and Choice of China in 1958: The Reasons for Withdrawal of the Chinese Army from North Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is rather very straightforward; why did the Chinese army suddenly decide to leave North Korea thus causing a state of power vacuum in North Korean security affairs. The consideration of the Northeast Asian relations in the 1958 era shows external problems such as the conflict of interest between the US and China over the Taiwan Strait, financial burden of the Chinese treasury from participation in the Korean War as well as the maintenance of troops afterwards, China’s efforts to reform the nation into a socialist economy would be more reasonable and plausible reasons for the withdrawal. The differential factor that has not yet been considered, but is very important, is the strategic and practical implications of the withdrawal. The significance of the withdrawal did not hold much strategic meaning, due to the fact that even with the withdrawal, prompt action under emergency circumstances for the Chinese to come to North Korean aid was already an agreed upon understanding between the two nations.
