This dissertation focuses on Kalevi Ensio Aho’s (b. 1949) vocal suite Chinese Songs and examines how Chinese classical poetry is reconstructed within a modern vocal work through the Finnish translations of Hannu Pertti Nieminen (1929-2015). Chinese Songs is based on poems by Chinese poets from different historical periods, including Zhuo Wenjun (卓文君, ca. 175 BCE-ca. 121 BCE), Li Yu (李煜, 937-978), and Li Qingzhao (李清照, 1084-ca. 1155). However, Aho did not use the Chinese originals as his direct compositional texts, but rather composed the work on the basis of Finnish translated lyrics. In this respect, the work provides an important case through which to examine how translated poetic language shapes the musical structure and expressive mode of a modern vocal composition. Accordingly, this study refers to the Chinese originals as the source of poetic imagery and emotion, while analyzing how the Finnish translated lyrics are structured and sonically realized in Aho’s formal design, melody, rhythm, harmony, and accompaniment.
The analysis reveals that Chinese Songs is a work in which the generic characteristics of yuefu poetry and ci poetry are reconstructed in different ways through Finnish translation and Aho’s musical language. The second song develops around the direct utterance, vivid song-like quality, and emotional expression of love characteristic of yuefu poetry, while the remaining songs are organized around the pictorial scenes, symbolic interior objects, inner emotions, and seasonal transitions associated with ci poetry. Formally, although each of the six songs has its own independent structure, the attacca connections between Songs I-II, III-IV, and V-VI create a continuous emotional journey. The musical flow is organized according to the unfolding of poetic imagery through various formal designs, including binary, five-part, four-part, and six-part structures. Melodically, Aho distinguishes the direct expression of love in yuefu poetry from the pictorial and inward-looking imagery of ci poetry through contrasts between ascending and descending motion, register, directionality, leaps, and stepwise movement. Rhythm concretizes the direct utterance of yuefu poetry and the scenic movement of ci poetry in time, based on the syllabic structure and sentence-breathing of the Finnish translated lyrics. Harmony, through the use of pentatonic scales, major and minor chords, ninth chords, and dissonances, sonically expresses the complexity of love, solitude, intoxication, and renewal. Furthermore, the accompaniment does not merely support the vocal line, but functions as an independent layer that interprets and expands the translated poetic imagery.
Kalevi Ensio Aho’s Chinese Songs is a cross-cultural vocal work formed through the interaction of the Chinese originals, Finnish translation, and modern vocal idiom. Through the analysis of this work, this study confirms that foreign literary texts can be transformed, through translation and musicalization, into the formal and expressive principles of modern art song. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between translated texts and musical structure in modern vocal works.
