국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 비제도권 사회교육자의 전문성에 관한 역사 연구
- YMCA와 흥사단을 중심으로 -

세계화로 인해 요청되는 세계시민성의 함양과 지방자치제의 효율적 운영을 위해 시민사회와 사회교육은 불가분의 관계에 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 일찍부터 시민사회와 사회교육에 관여해 온 우리나라 시민사회단체 활동의 중심에는 사회교육실천가가 존재해 왔다. 이들의 중요성을 고려할 때 우리나라 시민사회단체 사회교육실천가의 전문성에 대한 보다 깊은 논의가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 한국 YMCA 관련 사회교육실천가를 연구대상으로 선정하여 그들의 전문성을 지식․기술과 태도․윤리로 대별하여 시대별로 고찰하고 그 특성을 도출하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회교육실천가 전문성의 구성요소를 중심으로 살펴보면, 한국 YMCA 사회교육실천가는 시대를 관통하며 꾸준히 태도․윤리적 측면을 견지해 왔다. 시대별로 지식․기술의 내용면에서의 변화를 겪기는 했지만, 태도․윤리를 중심으로 한 전문성의 발휘로 기관의 설립 이념과 사회활동의 지향점은 고수되어 왔다. 둘째, 사회교육실천가 유형을 중심으로 살펴보면, 한국 YMCA 사회교육실천가는 ‘자기수련형’ 쪽으로 기울어진 ‘사회운동형’을 견지해 왔다. 한국 YMCA가 종교적 기관이라는 점에서 개인적 신앙을 위한 자기수련이 요청되었을 것이며, 사회적 이슈에 대한 적극적 대응으로서의 사회운동적 성향도 변함없이 강조되었을 것이다. 셋째, 한국 YMCA 사회교육실천가의 전문성에 대한 외부 환경요인의 영향력은 그리 크지 않았다. 제도권 사회교육실천가의 전문성이 정치․경제적 환경요인으로부터 크게 영향을 받은 것에 비해 시민사회단체 사회교육실천가의 전문성은 정치적 영향력을 약하게 받는 수준이었다.
본 연구가 갖는 학문적․실천적 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그동안 우리나라 사회교육 분야에서 다루어지지 않았던 시민사회단체 사회교육실천가에 대한 통시사적 사례연구라는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 특히, 전문성을 구성요소로 세분화하여 살펴보았다는 점에서 향후 그들의 전문성 논의를 보다 구체적으로 진행하는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 둘째, 본 연구의 결과는 현재의 사회교육실천가들이 그들 전문성과 정체성을 보다 비판적으로 바라볼 수 있는 평가준거로 활용될 것이다. 마지막으로 우리나라 사회교육실천가 양성을 위해 지식․기술과 태도․윤리적 측면의 균형잡힌 커리큘럼으로 발전해 가는 데 의미 있는 연구가 될 것이다.

A Historical Study on the Professionalism of adult educators at South Korean Civil Society Organizations
- Focused on Korea YMCA -

It is no exaggeration to say that there are inseparable relations between civil society and social education to cultivate global citizenship and to run the local self-governing system efficiently in this globalization era. At the center of activities of South Korean civil society organizations, which have long participated in civil society and social education, are adult educators. Considering their importance, it is needed to deepen the discussions about their professionalism at civil society organizations across the nation. Thus this study set out to examine Korea YMCA, one of leading civil society organizations in South Korea, categorizing the professionalism of adult educators into knowledge, skills, attitudes and ethics, and studied them according to the periodization.
The findings were as follows: first, for the "attitudes and ethics" aspect, I would say that the adult educators of Korea YMCA had consistently maintained their attitudes and ethics throughout the periods in the professionalism components of adult educators at civil society organization.
