This article analyzed the conflicts and the responses of the divorced women who are on the way of independence and reviewed the process of their independence of the women with free will such as opting to divorce, being adjusted to the new life and being self-reliable. Furthermore, this article proposed that the attitudes of the women responding to the event of 'Divorce' are not traditional and passive any more and tried to discover new insight and alternatives to divorce. For the purpose of the study, various problems and conflicts that the divorced women would suffer after divorce. Additionally, the responses of the divorced women to the difficulties that they might have during the process of independence, efforts to find the solutions and the process of independence were looked into in details through their experiences.
The followings are the results of the study.
First, divorced women had sufferings from the preoccupation of the society after divorce in Korean society patriarch convention is prevalent. The status of 'Divorced Woman' made them experience alienation from the social network that focused on her husband in the system of 'Marriage'. Everyday conversations highlighting family that are frequently used to make friends and to make new relations hurt them and made them feel separated because those conversations made them feel that they did not live a normal life.
Although they did have jobs, they would experience poverty or degraded life financially after divorce. It is partially because of the structure of labor market which discriminates against women and partially because they did not receive alimony or children nurturing allowance from their ex-husbands. In this situation, private education and child care expenses are the biggest reason to cause the financial difficulties. In particular, the preference to 'Fixed dismissal time' and 'Short working hours' because of young children interfered capability development and reduced their prospect income.
Psychologically, divorced women had anxiety about being a single mother and solely responsible for the nurturing of their children. It is not because of their incapacity to rear children but because of the obsession that they should overcome the preoccupation of the society such as 'child without father' and the pressure to respond to the social requirements to live 'a live as a mother'. On the other hand, women with longer period of marriage had bigger emotional difficulties because of 'loneliness' and 'sense of loss' after the divorce.
Additionally, regardless of high rate of divorce, people had a paradigm on divorced women and they dealt with divorced women differently. Especially, men around the divorced women in their work or neighborhood tended to have wrong conception that they are sexually "easy women" because they did not have husbands.
Second, regardless of social preoccupation, discrimination, and social, psychological and economic difficulties they had sense of responsibility for their option of divorce and actively responded to new life to search for their self-reliance.
The contracted social network after divorce became expanded to a new network centering themselves. The liberation from the burden that ‘They are the ones who take care of their husbands' and more free time gave them more opportunities to make new relationship with others in various places. Especially, the communities such as 'Divorced Club' on Internet acted as supporters to motivate them and provide energy by sharing the same experience such as divorce, confessing their difficulties and composing sympathy.
Although many women experienced the degradation of economic class because of low income and irregular work, they tried to find changes to avoid those situations such as entering graduate school or getting professional skill training to get more stable and higher income yielding jobs. On the other hand, women who stayed in 'Mother and Children's Center' who used to have difficulties in getting economic and nurturing supports from their families made most of welfare supports, such as asking about housing and incubation supports from local government, welfare facilities and various associations to let the people know their poor situations and get aids from them through publishing their opinions on Internet.
Third, the subjects of the studies showed substantial satisfaction on the divorce regardless of the preoccupation of the society and economic distress. They tried to be 'confident' in their lives revealing the fact of 'Divorce' not being ashamed of. Additionally, psychological supports and help for child care from family members especially from mother gave the divorced women psychological stability and self-reliance.
Although they experience alienation or conflicts because of the social discrimination and exclusion after divorce, they have 'hope' for their future escaping from unhappy marriage and try to discover the meaning of life again. Additionally, they recognize the value of various different lives escaping from the paradigm that the only normal life is married life. The liberation from the fixed sex role changed her 'anxiety' from the absence of her husband after divorce to 'confidence' that she can protect herself and her family. Furthermore, they realize the value of their existence developing their capabilities that they have long forgot in their married life.
