Purpose The purpose of this study was to verify the causal pathways and the model fit among participation motivation, training satisfaction, sport confidence, and continued participation intention, targeting trainees at Taekwondo studios in China.
Method Data were collected from 500 primary, middle, and high school Taekwondo trainees registered at Taekwondo studios. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and Amos 29.0. The statistical procedures included Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Reliability Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Path Analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).
Results The established research model was confirmed to be appropriate for verifying the causal relationships among variables in Chinese Taekwondo trainees, as it satisfied all goodness-of-fit criteria. The structural equation path analysis revealed that all hypothesized direct paths among the four variables were statistically significant, with participation motivation exerting the strongest direct influence on training satisfaction. Furthermore, all mediating effects were found to be significant, including the sequential mediation path via training satisfaction and sport confidence to continued participation intention. This result empirically demonstrated the existence of a multi-layered, partial mediation structure where both direct and indirect effects are present among the four variables.
Conclusion Participation motivation ultimately enhances continued participation intention through a multi-layered, mediating causal pathway via training satisfaction and sport confidence. Specifically, the structure was verified to be a partial mediation model due to the significant direct effect of participation motivation. This sequential causal structure offers both academic and practical value as a persistence enhancement model applicable to various sports beyond Taekwondo.
