국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 자발적 조직유형이 성장하는 역사적 요인이 무엇인지를 알아보기 위해 주로 로칸과 복지국가에 관한 이론적 설명의 틀을 기반으로 16개 서구국가들에 관한 자료를 불리안(Boolean) 비교방법에 의해 분석하였다. 자발적 조직에 대한 활발한 참여를 결정하는 주요한 필요조건은 국가의 매개적 역할을 전제로 한 도시자본가와 프로테스탄티즘의 결합요인으로 요약된다. 이러한 분석결과는 국가의 자율적 역할을 고려하는, 막스 베버의 근대시민사회에 관한 설명에 가장 가까운 것이다. 따라서 경험적 연구의 결과를 베버적 설명의 틀 안에서 재해석하고 이를 근거로 하여 이러한 연구결과와 이론적 설명이 한국을 포함하는 비서구 국가들에 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 알아본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tries to build a theoretical explanation of the main causes of nonprofit sector’s growth. A Boolean comparative analysis mainly based on the theoretical framework of Rokkan and Esping-Andersen indicates that the combination of the urban interest supported by the state and Protestantism is the necessary condition. This result is very close to Max Weber’s explanation of civil society which presupposes the facilitating role of the autonomous state. Thus, the empirical results are reinterpreted within the context of the Weberian explanatory framework and the implications of this theoretical endeavor with respect to developing countries including Korea are further explicated.
