The purpose of this research is to verify the effects of sensitivity-training group counseling program on the self-esteem and the adequacy of interpersonal relationships of the students. In order to realize such goal, the following hypotheses for the research have been presented.
Hypothesis 1. Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group will have heightened regards for their self-esteem when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Hypothesis 2. Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group will have heightened adequacy in their interpersonal relationships when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Hypothesis 3. Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group will continuously have heightened regards for their self-esteem when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Hypothesis 4. Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group will continuously have heightened adequacy in their interpersonal relationships when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Hypothesis 5. A significant, assertive relationship will exist between the self-esteem and the adequacy of interpersonal relationships among female students participating in sensitivity-training group counseling program.
In order to verify the hypotheses of this research, 30 second-year female middle-school students from B Middle School for Girls in Choonchun, Gangwon Province, were selected to participate in the program with the prior authorization from their parents. Two groups of fifteen students were placed as a testing and a controlled groups, respectively. However, three students from each group were left out, leaving twelve students from each groups to participate in this research. A ninety-minute long, sensitivity-training group counseling program was conducted twice a week on every Monday and Thursday afternoons after school and during the holidays for total of 10 sessions, while nothing was done on the controlled group. In addition, both groups utilized the total of two testing tools (for tests on self-esteem and adequacy of interpersonal relationships) to conduct prior, post and follow-up tests.
The testing group was applied with YOO Dong-su‘s 'Han-al Program,' a sensitivity-training program containing unique cultural qualities of Korean people. Upon testing, the collected data results were t-tested and analyzed for correlation using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program.
The following is the summary of the results from this research.
First, Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group had heightened regards for their self-esteem when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Second, Female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group had heightened adequacy of interpersonal relationships when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Third, After 33 days of observation, female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group continuously have heightened regards for their self-esteem when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Fourth, After 33 days of observation, female students who participate in the sensitivity-training group continuously maintained relatively heightened adequacy of interpersonal relationships when compared to female students from the controlled group.
Fifth, A significant, assertive relationship existed between self-esteem and adequacy of interpersonal relationships among female students participating in sensitivity-training group counseling program.
Therefore, it was verified that sensitivity-training group counseling program on second-year female middle-school students provides positive effects on enhancing their self-esteem and adequacy of interpersonal relationships.
