The purpose of this study aims at examining the relationship between the tourism industry and cultural assets, the realities of world tourism and its future, me realities of Korean tourism and its problems.
First, cultural assets can be compared to the flowers of cultural assets. However, we have been prohibiting the foreign tourists as well as the citizens from accessing, viewing, and utilizing the precious cultural assets by building up me high walls around the cultural assets. This comes from an absence of cultural mind-set. If you visit Paris, London, Rome, New York, Washington or elsewhere, you can easily see the people take a walk or jogging around the cultural assets. This is a right way to maintain the precious cultural assets. In the meantime, our cultural mind-set is not like this. We use the word 'protect', instead of 'maintain'---protect from infiltrator or enemy, or from what (?). This mind-set comes from an ancient authoritarian culture still dormant in our society.
Second, the world tourism represents the world largest industry, and employs the world's largest number of workers.
That is, the world tourism comprises more than 10 percent of the world 's GDP and more than 10 percent of me world's employees. One in every five persons is engaged m tourism in Spam while one in every seven persons works m tourism in England. This means that the dependence on tourism is ever increasing across the world. The tourism industry, like the information industry, belongs to an industry inexhaustible, value-added and future-Oriented.
Third, the number of world tourists will increase at a rapid speed as long as the world's wealth is ever increasing. Currently, the number of world tourists is a little over 11 percent, but about 20 percent of world people will take a trip around the world by 2020. There are, however, such unexpected obstacles to world tourism as the natural disasters like hurricane or tsunami, tenor like 9/11, world depression, diseases like SARS. As an example, the number of foreign tourists to the U.S. decreased to more than 10 million over three years after 9/11 tenor.
Fourth, the international tourism in Korea got a momentum when Seoul hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1988; for the first time in history, the number of foreign visitors exceed two million. As the Government liberalized the foreign travel in 1989, the number of Koreans who took a travel abroad began to speed up. Currently, the number of Koreans going abroad is twice that of foreign tourists visiting Korea; about 10 million Koreans go abroad annually while the number of incoming foreign tourists number about five million. This causes a deepening travel deficit. we need to open up the precious cultural assets to foreign tourists in an effort to balance the ever increasing tourism deficit. We tend to brag about our cultural assets, but we don't seem to know how we utilize and maximize our precious cultural assets to attract the foreign tourists. In the future, the world tourism will be increasingly becoming a sure indicator for our country to become a country to be loved, respected, and recognized by the people around me world.
