<AbsText> NORTH AMERICA, more particularly its eastern portion, has much in common with Northern Europe: many species of both the Fauna and the Flora of the one continent are reproduced as varieties, or with a very slight difference, in the other. Both are characterised by their great forests of coniferœ-- principally spruces and pines, whose dark outlines are relieved and enlivened by deciduous trees of the same character. With the exception of the beautiful family of maples, which are nearly peculiar to the American woodlands, these are found in the same situations, and so closely resembling each other, that the same general character is given to the forests of both continents. </AbsText>
