식민지 인민은 말할 수 없는가?: "동아신질서론"과 조선의 지식인 = Can the Colonial People Not Speak?: "New East Asian Order" and the Korean Intellectuals

This paper examines 1930s`` Korean intellectuals`` responses to and strategies dealing with the discourses East Asian solidarity against the West, which marked its beginning with the discourse of "New East Asian Order." When Miki Kiyoshi or Ozaki Hotsumi suggested "New East Asian Order," they wanted to reach out for the unity that crossed national boundaries including Japan. Such attempt premised on the transformation of Japanese identity, however, it was unacceptable. Thus, in result, the notion of East Asian solidarity became a suggestion that circulate Japanese identity, or a way of expanding the extension of identity in a hierarchical manner. Korean intellectuals`` responses to this attempt can be largely categorized into four groups: the strategy of "imitation" represented by "unification of Japan and Korea" (naisenittai); the strategy of secession suggested by So In-sik; that of implosion presented in Kim Sa-ryang``s literature; and that of traverse found in Han Sorya``s novel. These strategies demonstrates that the strategy of "imitation" cannot be a strategy for resistance unlike what Homi Bhabha said; and the other three strategies suggest that even the strategy of secession which entails silence can be a way colonial subjects "speak", which contradicts Spivak``s statement than the subaltern cannot speak.
