역사 교과서의 선사시대 서술에 대한 비판적 검토: 구석기·신석기시대를 중심으로 = Prehistory in History Textbooks of Korea: A Critical Review

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 현재 중고등학교에서 사용되고 있는 검인정 역사교과서의 선사시대 서술을 비판적으로 검토한 것이다. 고고학은 지난 20여 년 동안 많은 발전을 하였지만, 역사교과서는 이런 성과를 잘 포괄하지 못하고 있다. 교과서 서술에는 아직도 잘못된 자료 해석과 시각이 적지 않게 포함되어 있다. 문제의 가장 큰 원인은 집필에 전문 고고학자가 참여하지 않고 있기 때문일 것이다. 현재 교과서에서 선사시대의 분량은 터무니없이 적으며, 적절하게 다루어지고 있지 않다. 또한 인류의 진화와 선사시대의 문화변화가 지나치게 단선 진화와 발전의 시각에서 서술되어 있다. 선사시대의 삶은 단순히 원시적이거나 야만적인 것은 아니었다. 나아가 선사시대는 역사시대의 연장선상에서 이해되어야 하며, 교과서는 역사시대의 수많은 성취는 선사시대의 토대 위에서 이룩한 것임을 강조해야 한다. 잘못된 자료 소개와 이해, 서술은 시정되어야 함은 물론 앞으로 고고학의 학문 방법과 과정, 성취를 더 적극적으로 담아내야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present essay critically reviews descriptions of prehistory in history textbooks currently used in middle and high schools in Korea. While archaeology in Korea has witnessed a dramatic increase in terms of the available archaeological record providing new lights on various aspects of prehistory and early historical periods, history textbooks do not adequately accommodate these developments. From an archaeological perspective, there are not a few erroneous descriptions and understandings on prehistoric material remains and lifeways of Paleolithic and Neolithic hunter-gatherers and villagers in the modern day Korean Peninsula. The flaws mainly come from the fact that no archaeologists in fact participated in writing the textbooks. While textbooks unduly underscore the difference between prehistory and history mainly based on unlinear evolutionary perspectives, they should emphasize historical achievements were based on prehistoric developments. They should also accommodate logics of archaeological research and procedures as well as important artifacts and archaeological sites, which in turn exhilarates students to understand the value of prehistory and prehistoric archaeology.
