This study was conducted to examine the effects of pineapple sage (Salvia elegans Vahl) on antioxidant, whitening, wrinkle improvement, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects in deionized water (SEW) and 70% ethanol (SEE) solvents. As a result, the total polyphenol and flavonoid content of SEW was higher than that of SEE. SEW and SEE showed DPPH radical, ABTS+ radical, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activity and SOD-like activity, which increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and SEW showed superior antioxidant activity compared to SEE. As a result of analyzing Tyrosinase inhibitory activity and Elastase inhibitory activity, SEE showed a slight whitening effect, and SEW showed a slight wrinkle improvement effect. SEW showed high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), while SEE showed high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes).
As for the anti-inflammatory effect, it was confirmed that SEE had superior NO production inhibition effect compared to SEW in RAW 264.7 cell induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In addition, the protein expression of iNOS and COX-2 showed a higher decrease in SEE compared to SEW, and accordingly, SEE showed superior efficacy in mRNA expression. This showed the same trend as the NO production inhibition effect. Based on the results of this study, SEW exerts antioxidant and wrinkle-improving effects and shows antibacterial effects against E. coli, P.
aeruginosa, S. epidermidis. On the other hand, SEE has whitening and anti-inflammatory effects and has an antibacterial effect against S. aureus, C. acnes. Therefore, it is believed that SEW and SEE have potential as natural materials for industrial raw materials such as pharmaceuticals, health foods, and cosmetics.
