The aim of this paper is to investigate the inherent nature of the phonological phenomenon. I suggest that processes inserting feature apply only to the free/unspecified position lexically. It is formalized as the principle of Free Condition. It means that lexical phonological processes are directing toward the empty/unspecified position. I proceed to demonstrate how consistently Free Condition works as an explanatory principle in phonology, based on the data of English.
