AbstractThe crucial concern of many Afro-American novelists has been the reconstruction of
their history which has been “disremembered and unaccounted for”. Especially the
Afro-American women novelists have tried to reconstitute the past and black female
identity through various writing strategies. The purpose of this paper is to study Toni
Morrison's Beloved and to examine what strategies Morrison uses to reveal the
white/male distortion of black female experience.By placing her family history within a broader tradition of racial history, Morrison
demontrates the strength of motherlines in the slave community. By shifting the
dominant metaphor from white to black and from paternity to maternity, Morrison
challenges the white/male historical discourse and presents a black woman's version of
slavery as counterpoint to a narrative that has until now been told from a male point of
view. The heroine Sethe learns to represent the unspeakable and the uspoken in language and
re onstitutes the past through personal narrative. Sethe constructs a meaningful
life-story from the fragments of her memory and transforms separate and disparate
events into a whole and coherent story. In storytelling Sethe constructs an alternate text
of black Womanhood and challenges the hegemonic status of male slave narrative as
well as canonical history embodied in the master's narrative.
