The presence of nervous tissue specific S-100 protein and neuron-specific enoleasc (NSE) was studied immunohistochemically in 46 cases of tumors derived from neural crest by peroxidaseantiperoxidase immunoenzyme method on routine paraffin sections of the surgical specimens.
The results obtained were as follows:
    1. Of 46 cases of tumors derived from neural crest 45 cases (97.8%)were positively stained for S-100 protein and 12 cases (26.1%) for NSE.
    2. S-100 protein was positively stained in most of tumors derived from Schwann cells and melanocytes. However, malignant schwannomas contained little or no S-100 protein.
    3. NSE was positively stained in some of neuromas, neurofibromas, neurilemmomas, and malignant schwanomas. But, these activities were relatively weak. Two cases of compound nevi were weakly or mildly positive for NSE, but the remainders of melanocytic tumors were negative. Our results suggest that S-100 protein, compared with NSE, is widely distributed among tumors derived from cells of neural crest origin, including melanocytic tumors.
