For phonological inquiry-based activities to truly become inquiry-based activities, students must start by finding examples of phonological variation in their own speech or their peer’s speech. Then, these examples are categorized according to the same type of phonological variation. The categorized sets are further explored to identify the input, output, and environmental conditions of the rules. From this perspective, this paper extracts the requirements necessary to enable inquiry-based activities on the subject of phonological variation. By reflecting these requirements, the inquiry-based activity class was designed to activate intuition to find examples where phonological variation applies, categorize the found examples, and discover phonological rules from the categorized examples. After conducting the class as designed, the effectiveness of the inquiry- based activities conducted in this class and the significance of the inquiry- based activity class designed in this paper were examined through the activities of the students and their evaluations of the class.
