Forward Osmosis (FO) is an osmotic process that like reverse osmosis (RO), uses a semi-permeable membrane to effect separation of water from dissolved solutes. In this study, energy and physical exergy analysis of simplified RO and FO desalination plant by the use of chemical process simulation software (ASPEN PLUS). The FO system is modeled using single distillation column to separate draw solution solutes from the product water within the system. Thermal and electrical energy requirements of the process are calculated, as well as combined term for equivalent work. The results of the simulations are compared to the RO desalination system.
