Alfred Hitchcock’s <Murder!> was produced during the early transitional period to sound cinema and explores new possibilities of cinematic expression through theatrical devices and sensory experimentation. This paper analyzes the operation of fantastique embedded in the film on four levels: German Expressionist mise-en-scène, the dual structure of characters, the arrangement of theatrical space, and the interplay of music and intertextuality. Here, fantastique does not refer to fantasy grounded in overt unreality, but rather to the perceptual suspension and psychological anxiety that arise when the boundary between reality and the unreal becomes blurred. <Murder!> does not merely reproduce supernatural phenomena but transforms internal anxieties—such as psychological fragmentation, ethical conflict, and social repression—into emotional reality through audiovisual devices. In particular, the narrative structure that blurs the boundary between theater and cinema, the recurring theatrical framing, and the emotionally evocative music intervene in the audience’s perceptual system and disrupt familiar modes of cognition. This study positions <Murder!> as an example of Hitchcock’s formal experimentation during the early sound era and seeks to propose a theoretical foundation for analyzing the narrative potential where fantastique, psychological anxiety, and ethical resonance intersect in his early work.
