      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores the trajectory of the collecting, presentation, and appreciation of Goryeo celadon in the West, primarily in the U.S, from the late nineteenth century on. Who were the earliest collectors, how did they come to discover Korean celadons, and what were the types of pieces they favored? Who were the individuals behind the collections that came to be formed at select major museums? How did the presentations and writings about Goryeo celadon over the course of the twentieth century shape the Western public's understanding of this unique genre of Korean art? The majority of the early collectors of Goryeo celadon in the U.S. and Europe were primarily interested in Chinese or Japanese ceramics. Yet theyformed significant collections for their time that were subsequently gifted to or purchased by important museums, where the objects continue to enlighten the Western public today. A few unusual figures in the twentieth century, like Godfrey Gompertz (1904-92), spent time in Korea and were dedicated to collecting Korean ceramics, including celadon. Over the course of the twentieth century and through today, special exhibitions of Korean ceramics as well as the rise of dedicated galleries in Korean art in many museums around the world, have contrbuted toward a more sustained and informed contact between the Western public and Goryeo celadon. Its aesthetic appeal-a sublime elegance with a touch of playfulness, rather than flamboyant splendor-can only be enhanced through a deeper understanding of where and how Goryeo celadon was made and used, and how it was appreciated through history.
