The objectives of this study are two: first, to shed light on major aspects of Chang, Chi-Yeon's Chakahng Thought, whose main aim was the modernization of Korea and the recovery of her sovereignty taken away by imperialistic Japan; second, to show the Confucian foundation of the Chakahng Thought. The method of this study is a detailed analysis of his major articles.
I point out five aspect of Chakahng Thought:
1) Confucian origin of the concept of Chahahng,
2) pragmatic strategy of the Chakahng Thought,
3) necessity of the initiative of the movement to be taken by the public rather than a certain elite,
4) necessity of the modernization and recovery of the loss of sovereignty to be done solely through the gradual and fundamental change of Korean society, and
5) the aim to change the Korean traditional way of thinking.
While Chang Chi-Yeon was educated as a Confucian scholar, he was a progressive and westenized intellectual. Nevertheless the roots of his Chakahng thought are in Confucianism. This aspect of his thought is discussed in the remaining part of my study.
