장소 상실의 노동 서사와 정동적 소외 - 『코리안 티처』속 접경의 중첩을 중심으로 = Labor-narrative of Placelessness and Affective Alienation - Focusing on the Overlapping of Borders in Korean Teacher -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2020년에 발표된 서수진의 소설 『코리안 티처』에 나타난 정동적 노동을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 소설은 오늘날 한국어학당의 한국어교원이 겪는 정동적 소외를 잘 보여준다. 세계화의 이념을 실천하는 교육의 장으로서 1990년대 전후 대폭 신설된 한국어학당은 오늘날까지도 단순한 어학 교육기관 기능을 넘어 문화, 관습, 제도의 접경지대 역할을 수행하고 있다. 따라서 한국어교원이 수행하는 노동은 정동적이며 다층적이다. 이 공간에서 발생하는 다양한 차이들을 온몸으로 마주하면서 한국어를 가르쳐야 하기 때문이다. 서수진의 소설은 한국어학당이라는 장소의 특수성과 한국어교원의 정동적 노동 문제를 본격적으로 그린 텍스트라는 점에서 중요하다.
1장에서는 접경지대로서의 한국어학당의 위상을 살피고, 2장에서는 부유하는 정체성으로 존재할 수밖에 없는 한국어학당 교사와 학생의 존재 방식을 검토한다. 3장에서는 이 소설이 폭로하는 고학력 비정규직 여성 노동의 현실을 따라가보고, 4장에서는 푸코가 말한 ‘헤테로토피아’로서의 한국어학당 속 권력과 앎의 배치를 고찰하고 장소 상실 노동 서사의 의미를 짚어본다. 마지막 5장에서는 중첩된 경계 위 노동자 형상을 통해 경계가 사회적으로 구성되는 것임을 확인한다. 본고는 다양한 분할선이 지나는 장소이자 그 분할선을 구성하는 장소로서의 소설 속 한국어학당 공간을 읽어냄으로써 오늘날의 문학적 상상력을 점검하고 한국 사회 문제의 일면을 고찰했다는 점에 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to examine the affective labor in Seo Su-jin’s novel Korean Teacher published in 2020. This novel illustrates the affective alienation of KSL(Korean as a Second Language) teachers in KLI(Korean Language Institute). As a place of education that embodies the ideology of globalization, KLI, which have been newly established in large numbers around 1990, continue to serve as a borderland of different languages, cultures, customs, and institutions. Therefore, the labor of KSL teachers is affective and multi-layered, as they must teach Korean while facing the various differences that arise in this place. Seo’s novel is important because it is the first text to explore the specificity of the KLI and the affective labor issued of KSL teachers deeply.
Chapter 1 examines the status of the KLI as a borderland, and Chapter 2 examines the ways in which the teachers and students of the KLI exist as floating identities. Chapter 3 traces the reality of highly educated, irregular female workers that the novel exposes, and Chapter 4 examines the deployment of power and knowledge in the KLI as the Foucauldian ‘heterotopia’ and points out the implications of the narrative of the labor of placelessness. Finally, Chapter 5 shows that borders are socially constructed through the figure of the worker on the overlapping borders. This article is significant in that it examines the imagination of contemporary literature by reading the place of the novel as a place where various dividing lines pass and as a place that constitutes those dividing lines, and examines one aspect of today’s Korean social problems.
