페이션시의 재발견 : 고프만과 부르디외를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 20세기 사회이론의 에이전시(agency)에 대한 편향을 비판적으로 파악하며, 고프만과 부르디외의 행위이론을 조명함으로써 페이션시(patiency)의 관점을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저, 윤리학과 철학에서 제안된 페이션시 개념을 소개한다. 페이션시는 수동성과 감수(자)의 존재, 힘, 경험을 포괄적으로 지칭한다. 이를 바탕으로 우리는 베버에서 파슨스로 이어지는 20세기의 주요 행위이론이 어떻게 페이션시의 관점을 결여하고 있었는지를 비판적으로 검토한다. 이어 고프만의 『수용소』와 부르디외의 『파스칼적 명상』에 존재하는 페이션시의 관점을 논의한다. 고프만의 연극학적 접근에서 행위에 해당하는 ‘연기’와 부르디외의 ‘실천’은 순수한 능동성으로 환원되지 않는 감수의 조건을 함축하고 있다. 고프만의 경우에는 총체적 기관의 재소자인 정신질환자(mental patients)라는 페이션트의 경험을 탐구한다. 부르디외의 경우에는 반영구적 실업상태에 놓인 기층 프롤레타리아트가 경험하는 인내하는 기다림(patient waiting)을 탐색한다. 우리는 양자의 논의를 전거로 사회이론에서 페이션시에 대한 논의의 가능성과 필요성을 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article addresses the agential bias of the 20th-century social theory by proposing the concept of patiency in the following order. Firstly, based on Soran Reader’s discussion of this concept, we introduce the notion of patiency: the assemblage of the being, the experience, and the capacity proper to the patient. Secondly, we critically review two major significant sociological theories of action that represent the ignorance of the patiency: Weber and Parsons. Thirdly, we explore the possibility of re-reading the concept of the patiency more positively by reexamining two influential sociologists. For Goffman, the focus will be on the Asylum, in that he analyzed the total institution as the apparatus of patientialization par excellence of mental patients. As for Bourdieu, we interpret his Méditations Pascaliennes in which the epitomical figure of ‘hommes sans avenir(people without a future)’ appears and is patiently waiting: a common subject of his investigation of sub-proletariats in 1960s Algeria and 1990s France. In doing so, we argue the necessity and prospect of further discussion on the patiency.
