The purpose of this study was to compare muscle tone responses of finger flexors and the thenar muscle according to joint fixation location using a interchangeable joint modular finger orthosis. Fourteen healthy adults performed finger flexion and pinch grip tasks under three conditions: non-brace, proximal interphalangeal joint(PIP) joint fixation, and distal interphalangeal joint(DIP) joint fixation. Muscle tone of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), and thenar muscle was measured using a myotonometer(Myotone, Estonia). The results showed that FDP muscle tone significantly increased under the PIP fixation condition, whereas FDS and thenar muscle tone significantly increased under the DIP fixation condition. These findings indicate that joint-specific mechanical constraints alter muscle recruitment and force transmission strategies, even with the same brace structure. The results suggest that interchangeable joint fixation in finger orthoses may allow selective modulation of muscle involvement according to therapeutic goals.
