한국과 미국 치위생학 연구 동향 비교 분석 = A Comparative Analysis of Research Trends in Dental Hygiene in Korea and the United States

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구 배경 및 목적: 본 논문은 한국과 미국 치위생학의 연구 주제를 비교 분석하고 학문적 특성과 차이를 확인하여 치위생학 연구의 발전 방향을 모색하고자 하였다.
연구 방법: 2001년부터 2025년까지 게재된 한국 치위생과학회지 논문 1,265편과 미국 Journal of Dental Hygiene 논문 784편을 대상으로 한 연구의 결과를 비교 분석하였다.
결과: 한국 치위생학은 개인 수준의 행동 변화와 교육 분야에 연구가 집중되는 경향이 나타났다. 반면 미국 치위생학 연구는 예방 중심의 보건의료 전달체계, 전문직 정체성, 취약계층의 의료 접근성 등 보다 광범위한 공중보건 영역을 다루고 있었다.
결론: 향후 한국 치위생학 연구는 학문적 확장을 위해 다학제 협력에 기반한 공중보건 및 보건정책 중심의 연구를 강화하고, 행동 중재와 정책 연구를 통해 지역사회와 공중보건 체계에서 치과위생사의 역할을 확대해 나갈 필요가 있다.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to compare research topics in dental hygiene between Korea and the United States, identify their academic characteristics and differences, and propose directions for future development in dental hygiene research.
Methods: A comparative analysis was conducted on 1,265 articles published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene Science and 784 articles published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene from 2001 to 2025.
Results: Korean dental hygiene research has tended to focus on individual-level behavior change and education. In contrast, research in the United States addressed broader public health domains, including preventive healthcare delivery systems, professional identity, and healthcare access for vulnerable populations.
Conclusions: Future research in Korean dental hygiene should prioritize public health and health policy– oriented studies grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration, and further expand the role of dental hygienists within community and public health systems through behavioral interventions and policy research.
