Phonetic vowel duration and stress in Kashmiri

Kashmiri stress has been characterized as a system that exhibits a 4-way distinction rather than a binary distinction in syllable weight: CVVC syllables are heavier than CVV syllables; CVV syllables are heavier than CVC syllables; and CVC syllables are heavier than CV syllables (Bhatt 1991). This paper measures phonetic vowel duration of various sets of Kashmiri words and reports that “increased vowel duration”, a major phonetic property of stress, supports a binary distinction rather than a 4-way distinction in syllable weight. Phonetic vowel duration indicates that long voweled syllables attract stress over short voweled syllables, but not that CVVC and CVC syllables attract stress over CVV and CV syllables respectively.
