This study explores how nonverbal communication can be taught in Korean language education through poetry recitation. It begins from the recognition that the educational importance of paralinguistic and nonverbal elements in face-to-face interaction has been newly foregrounded in the wake of COVID-19. Poetry recitation is reconceptualized not as a subsidiary activity of reading aloud, but as a performance-based communicative activity in which learners mediate meaning with an audience through voice, rhythm, gaze, and posture. The study analyzes official documents of Poetry Out Loud (POL). The analysis shows that POL organizes recitation through observable categories and a cyclical process of performance, feedback, adjustment, and re-performance. Based on these findings, this study proposes design principles, a three-stage instructional sequence, and a rubric. The study is significant in that it demonstrates how poetry recitation can organize nonverbal communication as teachable content in Korean language education.
