This study was conducted to examine community residents' skin conditions and their knowledge level of skin care and to help skin care specialists develop education program for scientific and efficient skin care. Data were collected from 624 residents in Daegu, Kimchon, Gumi, and Andong from June 1, 2000 to August 31, 2000.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
1.In the case of physical health conditions, 51.2% of the respondents was in good health, while 12.0% of them was not in good health. 40.6% of them was concerned about skin care, while 17.3% was not concerned about it. 29.0% answered that their face skins were healthy, while 25.5% replied that they were not healthy. The variables of concern about skin care, health conditions of face skin, and satisfaction with skin care showed significant difference in the variables of age, education, occupation, economic status, marital status, and place of residence.
2.The problems of face skin were wrinkle(38.1%), freckles and lentigo(34.5%), and acne(17.8%). These problems displayed significant difference in the variables of age, education level, occupation, economic status, marital status, and place of residence.
3.The sources of obtaining informations on skin care were magazine(28.4%) TV and Radio(26.0%), friends and neighbors(24.4%), and skin care shop(9.1%).
4.The level of skin care was 3.05±0.54 points on the basis of 5 points. According to the level of skin care by physical health condition, the level of skin care was 3.18 points in the case of healthy respondents, while it was 2.87 points in the case of unhealthy respondents. The level of skin care was 3.32 points in the case of the respondents who were concerned about skin care, while it was 2.64 points in the case of respondents who were not concerned about skin care. The level of skin care showed significant difference in the variables of health conditions of face skin.
5.The knowledge level of skin care was 44.69±3.51 points on the basis of 60 points. It showed significant difference in the variables of age, education, occupation, economic status, marital status, and place of residence. According to the knowledge level of skin care by physical health conditions, it was highest in the case of physically healthy respondents(44.85 points).
6.Skin care was influenced by the factors of education level, experience in harmful side effect of cosmetics, occupation, economic status, the level of concern about physical skin care, knowledge level of skin care, physical health condition, and age.
Skin care is closely related with the knowledge level of skin care and concern about skin health. Therefore, related professionals and organizations must make efforts to develop education program for effective skin care in order to enhance the knowledge level of skin care and concern about skin health.
