Bile ductules are lined by flat or cuboidal epithelium connecting bile canaliculi between hepatocytes in the portal tracts. These bile ductule were proliferated in obstructive disease of hilary tract. But, the histogenetical origin of these hyperplastic bile ductules following biliary obstruction has not been established. Some people assume that they originate from liver cells, others think they are derived from preexisting ducts, and by anothers to be developed from intermediate cell types between biliary epithelium and hepatocytes. An experimentally induced biliary obstruction in the rat by ligation of common bile duct, and bile ductules was assesed by light microscopy, immumohisto- chemistry, and electron microscopy.
The results were obtained that a biliary cirrhosis with proliferating ductules developed 21 days after ligation of bile duct and these were identical to preexisting bile ductules in ultrastructural observation. And also, numerous mitosis of bile ductules were observed, It was concluded that hyperplastic biliary ductules were derived from biliary epithelial cells in preexisting bile ductules vy cell division.
