This thesis;studied on Japanese hairdressing from the old times to the Meiji Restoration by the time when Japan hadn't been affected by any western civiliztion.
This study used the literature, paintings, and existing dolls made of clay at the time as its materials to know how to fix hair, and examined different meanings according to various kinds of hairdressing.
The Japanese costume was changed as followsl; in A.D. 3 century, Kwandueui(貫頭衣) and Hwoingpokeui(橫幅衣) which were affected by southern countries. in A.D. 4-5century, the Japanese costume seemed to be assimilated into the costume of the ancient Korea, while it changed like the Altaic clothes in A.D. 5-6 century. Because of the cold weather, the upper garment called Kosode(小袖) falled down to the foot when the pants. Ko(袴) were taken off. When the knights came to appear, this Kosode used as a formal dress and long clothes like Po(袍) was popular among people. On the other hand. people from the low class and laborers still put on old-styled clothes called Momppe but htey wore Hagama in the case of participating a ceremony.
As for hairdressing. men tied up their hair into two strands called Mizra(美頭良), but began to fix their hair in Gye(??) and Gok(??) that meant Gyeolbal from period of Aska(飛烏) before the Meiji Restoration, while in Edo period(江戶), various kinds of hair styles for men appeared.
Women usually spread down their hair behind, but in the period of Kohun(古墳), a northern continental hair style. Ojeongye(烏田??) came to appear. It seemed that the ancient Korea introduced that hair style which included Suihaz(垂髮), a long hairdressing style. When it came to Nara period(奈良). Gyeolbal began to be popular only among women from the high class. In the middle ages of Japan, women got more chances to go out from their home, and head dresses like lzimegassa(市女笠), Uzeki(柱), and Gazeki(被衣) became popular. In the time of Momoyama(桃山) a hair dress called Garawa(唐輪) was common with women from the low class. while Sagaegami(下げ髮) was popular in the high class influenced by the ancient China. At the times of Edo(江戶), various hair styles such as Byungkogok(兵庫??), Ojeongok(烏田??), Seungsangok(勝山??), and Gyegok(????) were common among women, but from the Meiji Restoration, the western hairdressing was flowed into Japan, and Danbal(斷髮), permanent wave, and Sokbal(東髮) began to be popular. The traditional Japanese hair styles are now used only to fix a bride's hair or in the case of national holidays.
In old times, different colors and accessories of hair dress and style fo hairdressing showed to which calss a person belonged, but these days Japanese wear their traditional hair style in wedding ceremony or in national holidays. In old times, putting up or cutting one's hair meant keeping away from the worldly lives.
A study on fixing hair in ancient China will be carried out to examine how the culture including style of hairdressing of China flowed into Japan and influenced Japanese hair style.
