Gamma rays, the highest-energy part of the electromagnetic spectrum, provide a unique probe of non-thermal particle acceleration and radiation processes in astrophysical environments. They are produced through hadronic processes, via neutral pion decay accompanied by cosmic rays and neutrinos, or through leptonic processes involving synchrotron emission and inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. In particular, very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1--100~TeV) gamma rays probe properties of accelerated particles near their maximum energies, with spectra shaped by radiative cooling and $\gamma\gamma$ absorption. When combined with other messengers such as neutrinos, VHE gamma rays provide complementary constraints on particle acceleration and source environments.
Many astrophysical systems can emit VHE gamma rays, including supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, active galactic nuclei, and binary systems. Low-mass microquasars (LMMQs) are Galactic X-ray binaries in which accretion from a low-mass companion onto a black hole or neutron star powers relativistic jets. Although several theoretical models suggest VHE gamma-ray emission from LMMQs, no dedicated study of their gamma-ray emission has yet been conducted. Their weak external radiation fields and low ambient densities suppress interactions with external photons and matter, implying that VHE gamma-ray emission would be dominated by internal jet processes.
VHE gamma rays are mainly observed with ground-based experiments, particularly particle sampling arrays (PSAs), which are effective for observing TeV--PeV gamma rays by measuring secondary air shower particles on the ground. The data used in this thesis were obtained with the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory, one of the major PSA instruments. HAWC has an instantaneous field of view of approximately 2~sr, a duty cycle exceeding 95\%, and sensitivity to gamma rays from a few hundred GeV to several hundred TeV. These characteristics make HAWC well suited for long-term monitoring and population studies of VHE emission from LMMQs.
In this thesis, we analyze approximately 3,039 days of HAWC data to investigate VHE gamma-ray emission from LMMQs. Motivated by theoretical suggestions that black hole LMMQs in the low-hard state may emit VHE gamma rays, we selected target LMMQs based on their location and compact object type. As a result, we have selected five black hole LMMQs and conducted analyses by assuming all target LMMQs as point sources with a simple power law spectrum of index $2.5$: (i) we derive 90\% credible intervals (CIs) on the flux for each source using four quasi-differential bins and the full energy bin (1--100~TeV), and (ii) we search for gamma-ray excess by stacking the individual source likelihood profiles using the full energy bin. For the stacked analysis, we assume that gamma rays are produced via $p\gamma$ interactions and defined two physically motivated weighting factors used during the stacking step. The first scenario assumes that a fraction of the jet kinetic power $L_{\rm jet}$ is converted into gamma rays by a jet emission efficiency factor $\epsilon_\gamma$, and obtains the upper limit on this efficiency using the weighting factor $L_{\rm jet}/d^2$. The second scenario assumes that both gamma rays and neutrinos are produced in $p\gamma$ interactions, which lead to the relation $L_\nu = 3L_\gamma$. Using this relation together with a $1/d^2$ weighting factor, we set an upper limit on the all-flavor neutrino luminosity.
No statistically significant excess is observed in either the individual or stacked analyses. Therefore, 90\% CIs across all quasi-differential and the full energy ranges are reported. In the first scenario, the stacked flux limit is $1.28\times10^{-15}\,{\rm TeV^{-1}\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, implying a gamma-ray emission efficiency of $\epsilon_\gamma \lesssim 7.7\times10^{-6}$. In the second scenario, the stacked flux limit at 7~TeV is $1.21\times10^{-15}\,{\rm TeV^{-1}\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, corresponding to an all-flavor neutrino luminosity limit of $L_\nu \lesssim 2.17\times10^{32}\,{\rm TeV\,s^{-1}}$ at 3.5~TeV.
This thesis provides constraints on VHE gamma-ray emission by treating LMMQs as a single source class and serves as a useful basis for future multi-wavelength and multi-messenger investigations of particle acceleration and radiation processes in these systems.
