This study investigates the factors that shape users’ evaluations of virtual idols, a cultural phenomenon that has recently gained substantial traction in the entertainment industry. In particular, the study analyzes how prior exposure to virtual idols and human performer disclosure—whether a virtual idol group is presented as Human-Assisted(HAVI) or AI-based(AIVI)—affects users’ perceptions.
To this end, an experiment employing a 2×2 factorial design was conducted with 215 undergraduate students majoring in Media and Communication at the university in Seoul. The independent variables were (1) prior exposure (exposed vs. non-exposed) and (2) human performer disclosure (HAVI vs. AIVI). The dependent variables consisted of five perceived characteristics of virtual idols-expertise, attractiveness, interactivity, presence, and transcendence-along with overall likability. Gender, prior idol-fan experience, and personal innovativeness were included as covariates and statistically controlled.
The results showed that prior exposure exerted consistent positive effects on most evaluative dimensions-attractiveness, interactivity, presence, and likability-except for expertise and transcendence. This indicates that virtual idols function not merely as visual stimuli but as entities toward which users develop familiarity and emotional affinity through repeated exposure. Meanwhile, human performer disclosure had a significant effect only on interactivity; participants who were informed that the virtual idol was HAVI perceived higher interactivity than those told it was AIVI. This suggests that information implying “human involvement” heightens expectations of social interaction and shapes corresponding interpretations.
However, no significant interaction effects emerged between the two independent variables across any dependent variables. In other words, prior exposure and technological interpretation operate independently rather than jointly amplifying user evaluations.
This study contributes to virtual idol research by empirically demonstrating that the evaluation of virtual idol is structured around two distinct pathways: emotional-based familiarity derived from prior exposure and cognition-based interpretation informed by technological and human-related cues. Furthermore, by experimentally verifying the effects of distinguishing HAVI from AIVI and manipulating performer disclosure, the study offers both theoretical and practical implications for virtual idol production, fandom strategies, and the broader understanding of hybrid human-technology media content.
