근대 `교수(敎授)` 개념의 수용에 관한 개념사적 고찰 = A Conceptual History on the Adoption of `Kyo-Su(敎授)` Concept in Modern Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to understand the adoption of the concept of `Kyo-Su(敎授)` in modern Korea conceptual-historically. In general, the word `Kyo-Su(敎授)` means people who teach in universities - that is, `professor` - but has another meaning which is `teaching`, in contemporary Korea. This study is focused on the latter. The results were as follows. Firstly, the word `Kyo-Su(敎授)` was more used as the noun of `teacher` or `professor` than the verb `teach` or `instruct` in Joseon Dynasty. But it was widely used as a verb since 1880. Secondly, there is no strict discrimination between the words `teach`, `instruct` and `educate` etc., in the Korean-English Dictionary in 1890. Thirdly, the concept of `instruct` was differentiated from `education` after the introduction of Herbartianism, especially the word `Erziehender Unterricht` which translates to educational instruction. Fourthly, it is difficult to discriminate the concept of `instruction` and `education`, because the western concept of instruction includes the cultivation of knowledge as well as the body-mind cultivation. So `Kyo-Su(敎授)` has been used as a distinct meaning from `Kyo-Yuk(敎授)`, but as a similar meaning to `education` until now, owing to the Korean educational tradition.
