Since its first issue in December 2005, the children’s magazine Gaeddongine Noliteo(Children’s Playground) has been published for over 20 years, aiming to carry on the legacy of the magazine Eorini(Children), which was first published in March 1923. Despite the dominance of visual media, Gaeddongine Noliteo(Children’s Playground) is highly regarded for its role as a “guardian of children’s culture” in the form of a paper-based medium.
This paper examines the issues from the inaugural edition to the commemorative 200th issue (July 2022). It primarily surveys the general status of the magazine and explores its structural characteristics and historical significance.
First, this study investigates the background and publication history of the magazine. By analyzing meeting minutes that recorded the preparation process prior to its launch, it was confirmed that the creation of this magazine was promoted alongside the formation of a consultative body of children’s movement organizations as part of a children’s culture movement. Figures such as Lee Oh-deok and Yoon Goo-byeong were central to the mission of inheriting the spirit of the original Eorini magazine. Furthermore, the study identifies the intent to revive the term “children’s movement” and the goal of establishing the magazine as a medium through which various children’s organizations could interact and grow together.
Next, the study analyzes the key characteristics of the magazine’s content and its evolution over the decades. By naming the magazine “Playground”, the publication established “play” as its core functional direction. The elements of play featured in the magazine can be categorized into three main types: ‘Nature-friendly projects’, ‘Storytelling worlds through serialized formats’, ‘Intellectual inquiry and sensory, experiential play’.
In the current era of visual media, Gaeddongine Noliteo(Children’s Playground) also faces the need for change. In conclusion, this paper proposes the following: Establishing a firm identity as a “magazine that represents the voices of children”, Increasing the volume of “engaging narrative literature” for enjoyable reading, Encouraging the participation of children’s culture movement groups to maintain its role as an “activist magazine that awakens children”.
