Of the huge number of man-made organic chemicals, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are one of the most widely studies chemicals in term of environment contamination and toxicology with a great social concern. PCBs molecules consist of a biphenyl nucleus carrying to 10 chlorines; hence there are 209 possible PCB congeners that differ in the number and position of the chlorines. The cumulative world production of PCBs is estimated to be 1.2 x 10t. It can be estimated that about 780 x 10³of PCBs are still in use in older electrical equitment and other products and deposited in landfills and dump or in storage.
In the present study, we have conducted to evaluate the residual PCBs in the sediment of leachate water at landfill in Daegu. This study was conducted to establish the perchlorination method with SbCl from PCBs to decachlorinated biphenyl(DCB). The biphenyls was chlorinated and then, converted into the decachlorinated biphenyl(DCB) which was a single peak in GC-ECD chromatogram. The detection limit of DCB was 0.1ng. The quantification detection concentration of PCBs extracted using soxhlet was 0.5ng/g in the sediment. Concentrations of PCBs in the sediment of leachate water at landfills of Daegokdong and Bangchondong in Daegu were 242±67ng/g and 364±90ng/g, respectively.
