    Some species of winter type naked barley differing in their spring habits were sown in the different sowing times: in the comfortable sowing time, on March 3, and after the critical sowing time, on March 30, and the morphogenetical characteristics of the spike differentiation and development .were investigated. The results are as follows:
    1. Regardless of varieties used, vegetative shoot apex, which is hemispherical, is narrow in width and slightly elongated in the case of spring sowing. At the base of it a leaf and bract primordium which appear as alternate ridges are initiated by periclinal division of cells located in the dermatogen layer of apical merisem with Tunica-Corpus Apical pattern.
    2. In the case of sowing on March 3, the initiation of double ridges appeared first at the middle part of juvenile spikes and then proceeded basipetally and acropetally. The first appearance of ridges is 10 days earlier in the varieties of high spring habit(Sedohadaka and Bangju) than in those of low spring habit(Kwangke No. 27 and Ronsankwa No. 1-6) .
    3. At first the ridges are nearly equal in size but the upper ridge of each pair grows more rapidly and from it the spikelets are formed.
    4. Within each spikelet the differential order of floral organs is as follows, empty glumes, lemma, palea, anthers and pistil.
    5. The first indication of internode elongation in culm is observed at the late stage of 7th established' by Wada,
    6. In the case of sowing on March 3, the higher the spring habit of the varieties. the shorter the period of basic vegetative growth and the lower the spring habit of the varieties the shorter the period of reproductive growth.
    7. In the case of sowing on March 30, the varieties of high spring habit(Sedohadaka and Bangju)showed the normal heading but those of low spring habit (Kwangke No. 27 and Ronsankwa No. 1-6)did not. Although the double ridges ,appeared at the middle part of juvenile spikes .they were rosetted and then withered after all.
